PFTC 6-a-side Football 23/06/09
Polish-ed finish again!
North, South, East and West it seems the Poles are again the best!
There
was a sense of European déjà vu at the “Pray For
The City” 6-a-side football tournament at the weekend. Once more
it was dominated by the Polish teams.
“Pray For The City” is a network of Carlisle churches working together who have had a regular 6-a-side tournament over the past few years. The first tournament held in 2007 was won by Pizza Hut; but last year and this year has been the Poles.
Fifteen teams with squads of up to 10 players were fielded by various church teams and their ‘ringer’ friends vying for the esteemed “Pray For The City” neo-Jules Rimet trophy. The Polish teams, which are associated with St.John’s church on London Road, have been putting in some practice to take on church teams from Hebron, Scotby, Kings, Elim Community Church, St.Michael’s Stanwix, the Cathedral, Salvation Army Citadel and Carlisle Christian Fellowship; as well as other non-church teams.
Someone was obviously looking down on us as the weather was perfect for the day. This included the 150 or so elite gathering for their half time team talk on faith by Jos Askew.
Competition was passionate and committed with the semi finals resulting in losses for Hebron and Thursby 2. Each lost to Polish teams, of which there were three in the tournament. The final was a close match between Poles 1 and Poles 3 with the former squeezing a 1-0 victory over their comrades. (see picture).
An autumn tournament is a strong possibility; but the question remains whether Polish dominance can continue.
Pray For The City meets regularly to pray and work together. See the website prayforthecity.org.uk Our next evening prayer meeting is Tuesday June 23rd, 7.30pm at Carlisle Christian Fellowship building, Charlotte Street. Amongst other things we will be having one of the local CADAS drug and alcohol addiction workers to speak. All welcome.
